Bringing the 369th Experience to the Classroom

Lessons and resources for the K-12 classroom and beyond are designed to explore the strong connections between music, history, literature, and the arts. Interactive and engaging activities bring the stories of the 369th Regiment to life, emphasizing the aesthetic and cultural transformation of Jazz during and immediately following WWI.

GRADES K-2

PRIMARY

Elementary

Bring the history of the Harlem Hell Fighters to life for the youngest of students through interactive arts integration lessons.  Using age-appropriate literature, visual art, music, movement, and drama, these activities invite students to explore the perspectives of the brave and talented soldier/musicians of the 369th Regiment. Units for Grades K-2 and 3-5 align Common Core and National Core Arts Standards.

GRADES 3-5

INTERMEDIATE

MIDDLE SCHOOL

MIDDLE SCHOOL

In this unit of study, learners in the middle school grades explore the historical, social, and racial conditions in America that precipitated the need to raise a regiment of negro soldiers to fight in World War I.

HIGH SCHOOL

High school

High School students explore the connections between WWI, black soldiers, and Jazz through the lens of the 369th Infantry Regiment also known as the Harlem Hell Fighters. The lessons and resources provided engage students in analyzing primary and secondary resources including music, photographs, memoirs and song lyrics. Opportunities for assessment are also provided.

COLLEGE

COLLEGE

The purpose of this unit of study is to engage learners in the high school grades in exploring the historical and musical context of the 369th Regimental Band through studying Lieutenant James Reese Europe during the era of the First World War and beyond.
